To save the lives of severely burned patients, there is an urgent need to strengthen and expand the ‘Skin Donation’ and ‘Skin Banking’ framework across the country. Raising the issue under a Special Mention in the Rajya Sabha, Member of Parliament from Maharashtra, Vinod Tawde, called the central government’s attention to this critical health requirement.
Realization Following His Mother’s Demise
Sharing a personal reflection, MP Vinod Tawde stated that he realized the grave importance of this issue two years ago during his mother’s passing. He highlighted that when a major portion of a person’s body is burned, donated skin serves as a vital life-saver. It plays a crucial role in preventing severe infections and reducing the loss of vital body fluids.
Key Facts About Skin Donation:
Time Limit: Skin can be donated within 6 hours of death.
No Matching Required: Unlike organ transplants, skin donation does not require blood group or tissue matching.
No Alteration to Body Appearance: Only the topmost thin layer of the skin is retrieved, ensuring the external appearance of the donor’s body remains completely unaffected.
Long Shelf Life: Donated skin can be safely stored in specialized skin banks for up to 5 years.
Current Framework and Government Initiatives
Provision for skin donation currently exists under the ‘Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994’. The Central Government, through the ‘National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization’ (NOTTO), has taken several commendable steps to encourage organ and tissue donation. However, a more integrated and structured national mechanism is now essential.

Comprehensive Framework: Develop a specialized national skin donation framework with clear guidelines.
Strengthening Skin Banks: Upgrade and expand the infrastructure of skin banks across all regions.
Integrated Transport Network: Establish an integrated skin referral and transport network to ensure timely availability for critical patients.
Enhanced Logistics: Bolster skin chain logistics for efficient cold-chain preservation and transfer.
Nationwide Awareness Drive: Launch a nationwide public awareness campaign to eliminate misconceptions surrounding skin donation and encourage voluntary pledging.
