Kolkata: A fresh political controversy has emerged in West Bengal over Prime Minister ‘s proposed participation in the International Yoga Day event scheduled at Kolkata’s Red Road on June 21. Opposition parties have questioned the decision to host the event at the iconic venue, while BJP leaders argue that yoga is a universal practice aimed at health and well-being rather than a religious activity.
Responding to the controversy, West Bengal minister and BJP leader stated that congregational prayers had been offered at Red Road for many years despite the presence of several mosques nearby. According to him, objections are now being raised only because the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend the Yoga Day event.
Ghosh further argued that security arrangements around the Prime Minister’s events are a standard requirement. He noted that if such a program were organized at any other venue, surrounding areas would still be subject to security restrictions. In his view, the measures being implemented are in the larger public interest and are necessary for ensuring safety.
Opposition Raises Questions
Opposition leaders have alleged inconsistency in administrative decisions, arguing that activities that were previously restricted or denied permission at the venue are now being allowed for a government-backed event. Critics have portrayed the decision as an example of selective standards and have questioned the neutrality of the administration.
The BJP, however, rejects these allegations. Party leaders maintain that yoga should not be viewed through a religious lens, emphasizing that it has evolved into a global movement promoting physical fitness, mental wellness, and a healthier lifestyle.
Yoga Beyond Religious Boundaries
In his remarks, Dilip Ghosh described yoga as a practice that benefits people from all faiths and communities. He appealed to citizens to rise above political and religious divisions and participate in the Yoga Day celebrations.
According to BJP leaders, yoga is now practiced across the world and cannot be confined to any single religion or community. They argue that International Yoga Day is intended to encourage public health awareness and inspire people to adopt healthier lifestyles.
Political Symbolism of Red Road
Political observers note that Red Road is more than just a venue; it is one of West Bengal’s most symbolically significant public spaces, often associated with major state events and public gatherings. As a result, any high-profile event involving the Prime Minister is bound to attract political attention and scrutiny.
While the BJP presents the program as a national initiative focused on health and social harmony, opposition parties view it through the prism of political messaging and administrative priorities. Consequently, the Yoga Day event has become a subject of political debate in addition to its public health objectives.

The upcoming Yoga Day event at Red Road has placed both public health and politics at the center of discussion in West Bengal. While the BJP portrays the program as an opportunity to promote wellness and social unity, opposition parties continue to question the circumstances surrounding its organization. Whether the controversy remains limited to political rhetoric or develops into a larger political issue in the state will become clearer in the days ahead.
